Put a robe on that Wizard!

The entertainment world is all abuzz because Harry Potter ditches the glasses and his clothes.

So, like who cares? Daniel Radcliffe is a young actor with a long career ahead of him. Equus is a classic play that happens to require nudity.

Some parents have expressed concern that “Harry” is a role model. “Harry” may be a role model. “Daniel” is an actor.Â

Muggles.

I’m more concerned that he should be off filming the next theatrical installment of Harry Potter.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is in theaters July 13, 2007.

If it’s Wednesday, Webb must be imploding.

Democratic quest for new depression
Jay Ambrose in TimesDaily.com

More than anything, it has now become obvious, the Democrats want another Great Depression, the era of their most robust ascendancy, and if the facts won’t give them one they will do what Sen. James Webb of Virginia did in his response to President Bush’s State of the Union speech: They will invent one out of thin air.

The Right Wing Liberal Asks:Â Will Webb Let Me Answer?
The arguments regarding the liberation of Iran (which I would support) have been going back and forth for quite a while, but the question of the President’s power to do so is relatively new. However, for those who believe Congressional authorization is required (as I do), the fact is - whether Senator Webb likes it or not - it has already been granted.

And Riley gives us a look at Jim Webb’s New Best Friends.

It’s a small world after all…

Over at Bearing Drift, Brian gives us a flashback to the 80s with John Chichester’s theme song:Â I Am the World.

And to think when the real “We Are the World” came out, we were trying to get John Chichester elected as Lt. Governor.

Fortunately he lost. To a Democrat who faced a budget crisis (a real one) without raising taxes.

Yeah, Doug Wilder.

Show the troops you REALLY support them.

Democrat, Democrat, Democrat

There. I said it.  The country is going to hell in a handbasket and the party of the perpetually offended is worried about two letters.

Oh. Good. Grief.

Wrong again Senator Webb

Here’s the video everyone needs to see. H/T to The Mason Conservative and others:

Let’s get it straight once and for all:

IF YOU DON’T SUPPORT THE WAR, YOU DON’T SUPPORT THE TROOPS!

Stop pretending otherwise. The troops know the truth.

If it’s Tuesday, the Democrats want to run…

I’ll probably get slugged for this but:Â A warrior’s voice: Webb’s son blogs
Richmond Times-Dispatch

A Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam, Webb has been loath to talk about Jimmy. He has said he didn’t want to politicize his son’s service. On the campaign trail, Webb wore his son’s combat boots.

God bless Jimmy and all of our troops.Â

‘No Victory to Be Had in Iraq,’ Democrats Say
By Susan Jones
CNSNews.com Senior Editor

CNSNews.com) - “In Iraq, there is no victory to be had in an enterprise that has been ill-fated from the start,” the nation’s oldest senator said on Tuesday.

Driving While Defeatist
By Frank J. Gaffney, Jr.
Members of the 110th Congress are behaving like drunken drivers with respect to the conflict in Iraq, veering wildly all over the road, seemingly oblivious to the risk they pose to others. Before they do actual harm by voting on various resolutions aimed at repudiating President Bush and further undermining his wartime leadership, they should be obliged to sit through the sort of sobering, behavior-modification program to which courts assign those found operating heavy equipment while inebriated.

Aquarius sunset
By Cal Thomas
As with the Vietnam anti-war protests, several of the same Hollywood actors spoke against the effort to make Iraq a stable and independent nation. Hollywood is the land of make-believe where love means never having to say you’re sorry and acting means never having to take responsibility for your words and behavior, which are written and directed by others. These stars live behind gates with security alarms and guards who protect their privileged lives.

H/T to The Right Wing Liberal for: Why we cannot leave Iraq before 2010 - at the earliest

Thus, any politician who talks about America leaving Iraq before early 2010 (when the new government is formed) is, in my view, dangerously wrong - and that goes for the Administration and its supporters as well as for the Democrats and the Wobblies. We cannot achieve freedom for Iraqis and victory for America unless and until we kick the Wahhabists, the Saddamists, and the Khomeinists out of Iraq.

Kat asks (and we agree) Why don’t we let them decide? Â

After all, they’re the ones over there doing the job; why don’t we listen to what our troops are saying about “redeploying” or “a formula that will in short order allow our combat forces to leave Iraq.

Words from Hillary ‘07 don’t match Hillary ‘03
On tape, Clinton says war vote based on intel, now says she was ‘deceived’
WorldNetDaily.com

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton Hillary has told an Iowa audience that she was deceived on the congressional vote to take military action against Saddam Hussein in Iraq, contradicting an earlier video recording in which she testifies that her decision was made based on her own information and intelligence.

2003: “I ended up voting for the resolution after carefully reviewing the information, intelligence that I had available, talking with people whose opinions I trusted, tried to discount the political or other factors that I didn’t believe should be in any way a part of this decision,” she said.

2007:Â “So he took the authority that I and others gave him and he misused it, and I regret that deeply. And if we had known then what we know now, there never would have been a vote and I never would have voted to give this president that authority.”

I\'ve Always Been a Yankees Fan: Hillary Clinton in Her Own Words

Â

Speaking of books. here’s an old one, but a good one:

Book Report

Students were assigned to read two books, “Titanic” and “My Life”,
by Bill Clinton.

One smart-ass student turned in the following book report, with the proposition that they were nearly identical stories. His professor had a sense of humor and gave the student an A+ for his report:

Titanic: $29.99
Clinton: $29.99

Titanic: Over three hours to read
Clinton: Over three hours to read

Titanic: The story of Jack and Rose, their forbidden love, and
subsequent catastrophe.
Clinton: The story of Bill and Monica, their forbidden love, and subsequent catastrophe.

Titanic: Jack is a starving artist.
Clinton: Bill is a bull$#%& artist.

Titanic: In one scene, Jack enjoys a good cigar.
Clinton: Ditto for Bill.

Titanic: During ordeal, Rose’s dress gets ruined.
Clinton: Ditto for Monica.

Titanic: Jack teaches Rose to spit.
Clinton: Let’s not go there.

Titanic: Rose gets to keep her jewelry.
Clinton: Monica is forced to return her gifts.

Titanic: Rose remembers Jack for the rest of her life.
Clinton: Clinton doesn’t remember jack.

Titanic: Rose goes down on a vessel full of seamen.
Clinton: Monica… ooh, let’s not go there either.

Titanic: Jack surrenders to an icy death.
Clinton: Bill goes home to Hillary… basically the same thing.

Hillary wants George W. Bush to solve all the problems before she’s sworn into office.

Then why, Madame Presumptive Heir Apparent, would we need YOU?

Â

Speaking of wanting to run, Richmond.com has this:

Gilmore for President
Jim Gilmore threw his hat in the ring in early January.

It’s been more than six years since former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore held a publicly-elected office, but on Jan. 9 he filed papers with the Federal Election Commission, formally announcing his candidacy for U.S. president.

Since his announcement, critics in the political blogosphere have been asking, “Jim who?”

The Webb Implosion Continues

One of these Webbs is not like the other.

Â

“The majority of the nation no longer supports the way this war is being fought; nor does the majority of our military” - Senator Jim Webb in the Democrat response to the State of the Union.

Â

I don’t believe that there is any politician who has the right to say that he or she is speaking for the troops, for the military” - Senator Jim Webb, Sunday on Face the Nation

H/T to The Right Wing Liberal.

Soaking the Rich, Again
The Wall Street Journal

Democratic Senator James Webb of Virginia played the class card in his State of the Union response Tuesday night, but he is apparently too new to the job to realize how crucial “the rich” are to his party’s spending ambitions.

Webb of distortion
The Washington Times
The truth does not belong exclusively to either side — and it would be earth-moving, as surely Mr. Webb wants to suggest it is, if it were proven that a majority of troops now favor withdrawal. But this is an attempt to shoehorn the evidence into a soundbite. It does the debate over Iraq no justice. It is a sleight of hand and no more.

More politics of envy from the Democrats
Star Parker
The problem of the party of Webb and Schumer is not communicating their message. It’s having the wrong one.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

As long as we have revived the practice of celebrating multicultural milestones (briefly suspended when Condoleezza Rice became the first black female to be secretary of state), let us pause to note that Mrs. Clinton, if elected, would be the first woman to become president after her husband had sex with an intern in the Oval Office.

On this day in 1986

Remembering The Challenger, January 28, 1986.

The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honoured us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and ’slipped the surly bonds of earth’ to ‘touch the face of God.’

Public Transportation or Public TV?

Public Education or Public TV?

Which do Virginian’s think is more important?

Â

Conservative Republican Senator Ken Cuccinelli has introduced an amendment that essentially would defund public radio and television in Virginia. An amendment, that would save the Commonwealth some three and a half million dollars.

Kenton thinks this is a war to defund Big Bird. I personally think it’s time Big Bird started paying his own way.

After all, Sesame Street is 38 years old, it premiered in 1969.

Since that time, Big Bird has received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Balloon in the Macy’s Day Parade, he has his own books, his own line of plush toys, his own DVDs, and a Sesame Street Amusement Park.

Isn’t it time he stopped living off the government bird seed?

Kenton is worried that public radio and tv would have to compete for advertising dollars. And just why not. If they provide quality programming that people want to listen to or watch, that’s not going to be a problem.

Oh, wait…I see…

The Webb Implosion Continues

Dang! I’m off line for four days and come back to find little has changed. Jim Webb continues to unravel…consider…

SurveyUSA tells us most Virginians disapprove of Jim Webb’s performance as U.S. Senator.

47% of Virginians surveyed disapprove of Jim Webb’s performance. Some “rock star,” huh?

Also at SWACGirl.

H/T to Riley for Jim Webb MIA in the Senate for Virginians
Why was Jim Webb MIA in the Senate for Virginians yesterday on their top priority? If Webb can’t (or won’t) do his job, then perhaps he should revert to form and just quit.

Hugh Hewitt gives us An essay from an active duty officer with more than 25 years of service, addressed to his fellow USNA alum, Senator James Webb.

From A Naval Academy Graduate To Senator Webb
I was struck by his demeanor. One announcer called him smooth. Another referred to him as cool. What I saw was a simmering cauldron of arrogance, anger and resentment.

FrontPageMagazine posts a 1995 editorial by James Webb here

The people who directed the antiwar movement did not care whether McNamara had a workable strategy, or whether it could have been adapted to circumstances. They did not care whether Nixon’s Vietnamization program might have worked. They did not care whether the South Vietnamese should have been given an adequate chance to adjust their strategy after the American withdrawal. And they did not care whether the communists signed a pledge guaranteeing free elections and a peaceful reunification of the country. Quite simply, they wanted the communists to win. Those who were adults during the Vietnam era know this truth full well. Others, however, particularly our children, have seen it glazed over and even denied as the reality of what happened after 1975 became ever more clear.

W. Thomas Smith Jr. at National Review Online gives us Webb vs. Facts
Virginia’s new senator should look at military retention numbers.

The Military Times poll also suggests that most soldiers believe we should have between 146,000 and 200,000-plus troops in Iraq. That’s exactly what Bush proposes and Webb opposes. The senator forgot to mention that.

H/T to The Right-Wing Liberal for
Webb’s Foot-in-Mouth Disease:Â National Review notices the ailment

H/T to Kilo at Spark It UP!!!! for Jim “Copperhead” Webb

Finally, head over to Two Conservatives for Washington Post: Using Middle Names is “Juvenile”, “Contemptable”
So, any of your left-wingers who were so proud of yourselves for knowing how to say Allen’s middle name want to attack the Washington Post for calling your tactic “juvenile”, “contemptable”, and “sleazy”? Anybody expect the Post to go back and denounce Webb’s campaign for the same tactic?

Webb Implosion Watch: And so it begins…

Okay, we admit, we didn’t watch it. More on the reason why in just a minute.

But I’ve read his remarks and commentary of the President’s remarks. To be fair to the Junior ~high school~ Senator, the President’s remarks weren’t released until just minutes before the speech, so it really couldn’t be an SOTU “Response” in the actual sense.Â

That said, there were no real surprises in what Webb said.

Well, except for the fact that while the apology for slavery debate rages in the Virginia General Assembly, Webb chose to quote from a slave holder, Andrew Jackson.

Perhaps he should have read more of Jackson:

1835: Northern abolitionists sent propaganda to the South.  Postmasters refused to deliver it and Southern whites destroyed it in violation of the law. Jackson said, “I have read with sorrow and regret that such men live in our country - I might have said monsters - as to be guilty of the attempt to stir up amongst the South the horrors of a servile war - Could they be reached, they ought to be made to atone for this wicked attempt, with their lives.  But we are the instruments of, and executors of the law; we have no power to prohibit anything from being   transported in the mail that is authorized by the law… (The postmaster should) deliver to no person those inflammatory papers, but those who are really subscribers for them… The postmaster ought to take the names down, and have them exposed thro the public journals as subscribers to this wicked plan of exciting the negroes to insurrection and to massacre.” (Jackson, V5. p360-1) Quoted here.

Fascinating.

We probably won’t comment much more on the SOTU. At least until next week. We’re heading out of town tomorrow.

As for the reason we didn’t watch tonight?

We saw the Richmond Opening Night of Tony and Tina’s Wedding. Truly one of the most bizarre, yet fun, theatrical experiences I’ve ever had.
