EU Gets One Right

The European Union has finally done something smart.Â
Â
In order to put a stop to the misimpression that there’s any kind of link between terrorism and Islam, the Brussels-based government has drawn up guidelines to keep politicians from half-wittingly furthering such an absurd notion. Here.

About time.
Â
Banned terms include:Â jihad, Islamic, and fundamentalist.
Â
Jihad is verboten because it really means “a personal struggle to live a moral life”, and anybody who thinks it has anything at all to do with bombing trains or crashing planes is just stupid.
Â
The newspeak translation of Islamic terrorism is terrorists who abusively invoke Islam; this speechwriters’ dream-term is a nod to the frequently buried facts that Islam means peace and Islam is a religion of peace.Â
Â
An EU spokesman explained how banning words will destroy one of the terrorists’ best weapons:

“Careful usage of certain terms is not about empty political correctness but stems from astute awareness of the EU’s interests in the fight against terrorism.

“Terrorists exploit and augment suspicions.”

Let’s be real here:

We must stop giving terrorists fodder by expressing suspicions about them.Â

EU officials have wisely not published the classified guilelines [sic].
Â
I mean, think about it:
Â
If everybody could know which words were allowed or not, it would be chaos.

Senator Resign-stein

The Right-wing Liberal has the story and the challenge: Senator Feinstein, resign.

California Democrat(ick) Senator Diane Feinstein recently, and quietly thanks to the Main Stream Media, resigned her position Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee because it turns out her husband benefitted from over $1.5 billion in contracts for which she voted.

Ooops.

So she resigned from the Subcommittee.Â

RWL is right. She should resign from the Senate.

But we’re going to take it one step further. Senator Feinstein shares her home town of San Francisco with none other than Madame Speaker Nancy Pelosi. You know, the same Nancy Pelosi who said You must drain the swamp if you are going to govern for the people.

Looks like it’s time to unclog the drain Nancy. Or is this a little too close to home?

I mean, think about it. Two prominent liberal California women in Congress. One in the House, one in the Senate. But both from San Francisco.

You don’t think there was never any coffee talk? Never any sharing a First Class experience flying across country?

Never a chance for Nancy to ask Diane, “So, how’s your husband’s business?”

We think Senator Feinstein needs to resign. And we call upon the House Ethics Committee to ask the questions, “What did Nancy know? And, when did she know it?”

The American people deserve an answer.

And maybe another resignation.

Tokyo Rosie goes off the deep end

No. But I do believe the first time in history that fire has ever melted steel. I do believe that it defies physics for the World Trade Center Tower Seven, building seven, which collapsed in on itself, it is impossible for a building to fall the way it fell without explosives being involved, World Trade Center Seven. Friday Whine and Cheese: Not a good week for Lt. Dan (Senator Hothead)

While I’m not a big fan of Mac Watson on WRVA, I snicker every time I hear him refer to Senator James Hothead Webb as “Lt. Dan.” It’s a reference, of course from the Tom Hanks movie Forrest Gump.

In one of the most amazing scenes in the film, Forrest carries his wounded fellow Marines (including Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan) out of the combat zone.

Not so for Virginia’s own Lt. Dan.Â

Earlier this week we told you how “The Butler Did It.”

Philip Thompson an aide to Senator Webb, and a fellow Marine was arrested for trying to take a bag belonging to Senator Webb into the Senate Office Building. Unfortunate contained in the bag were a loaded pistol and two fully loaded magazines that belonged to the senator. FoxNews.com.

Webb’s office denied knowing about it.

“To our knowledge, this incident was an oversight by the senator’s aide. Phillip Thompson is a former Marine, a long-term friend and trusted employee of the senator. We are still awaiting facts,” Webb Communications Director Jessica Smith said in a statement.

In typical Webb fashion, the Senator claimed he knew nothing about it and let his staff member and fellow Marine spend 28 hours in a D.C. jail.

Webb then threw his friend under the bus:

“I think this is one of those very unfortunate situations where, completely inadvertently, he took the weapon into the Senate yesterday,” Webb added. The senator noted that he was in New Orleans from Friday until Monday. He speculated that the incident happened because three of his cars were moved because of the trip.
[Webb says he did not give aide his gun, The Hill, March 27]

Let’s be real here, the options are:

1) Webb gave it to him
2) Thompson stole it
3) Thompson took it into the Senate Office Building because Webb carelessly left a gun in his car.

What kind of responsible gun owner doesn’t know where he keeps his firearms?

And what kind of Marine leaves his buddy behind? Forrest didn’t leave Lt. Dan behind. But Virginia’s own Lt. Dan did just that to Thompson.

Leslie Carbone nails it with Leaving a Marine Behind. Â Jim Webb is a disgrace to the U.S. Marine Corps and to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Agreed Leslie.

In fact, Webb let his “friend” and aide spend his 45th birthday in jail, away from his wife and kids.

It was certainly predictable that we would nail Webb on this from the right:

Virginia Virtucon:Â Webbies, Webb-O Don’t Know Gun Safety, Hotline Oncall Still Covering for Senator Thinskin

Webb Speaks! Sen. Jim “Thinskin” Webb (D-WashPo) has finally broken his silence. He calls the incident involving HIS gun, “Inadvertent.” Sort of like him being elected to the U.S. Senate….

Webb Hangs Aide Out to Dry Own up to your carelessness, Senator. You should ALWAYS know where your guns are and NEVER leave them loaded when not in use. People like you should not be permitted a concealed weapons permit.

Even President Bush got into the act.

At the Radio and Television Correspondents’ Association dinner, the President the organization for providing dinner, “and I’d like to thank Senator Webb for providing security.”

No doubt, Webb wanted to slug him.

Scott’s Morning Brew: Jim Webb, Concealed Carry and The Police (not the band)

Scott says: I know a ton of former Marines. NONE, absolutely NONE that I know of would have left their friend hanging like Webb did to Thompson. Court case pending or otherwise. As far as I am concerned, Webb has tarnished the so loved and even envied, “Semper Fidelis” motto. I wonder how many Marines will now walk by Webb and say “Semper Fi Marine”. If I were, I wouldn’t.

SWAC Girl:Â Bush vs Webb: “Was it something I said?”

The Right-Wing Liberal: Webb’s Foot-in-Mouth Disease:Â Exhibit Twelve

United Conservatives of Virginia: Glaring Inconsistency from Lt. Dan

Reactions from the left were predictable from some. However, not even The Richmond Democrat, otherwise known as the blogosphere’s “Patron Saint of Whinage” let Webb completely off the hook:

RD said:Â As much as I like and admire Senator Webb, I cannot help but conclude that his actions fell short of responsible gun ownership and handling, a fact that is all the more disappointing considering his level of experience with firearms.

And here I passed on Satan’s offer for rights to the iceskating consession.

Of course RD does whine about attempts to embarrass Webb. He tries to slam Leslie Carbone with his bizarre “logic” on a response over at Grumpy’s Gripes

Sorry RD, we don’t have to attempt anything. While Webb can’t handle his own firearms, he’s perfectly capable of carrying the embarrassment all on his own.

Over at Not Larry Sabato, Ben gave us a compliment with:Â Best Graphic of Year (So Far) for this:

Aw shucks Ben, you flatter us. Rightly so of course. But, thanks.In another post, Ben got it right when he said: Huge mistake in media relations here to allow this story to continue without giving more information…And so, the Webb Implosion Watch continues. We’ve said all along he’d never make a full six years in the Senate. He certainly doesn’t belong there.We never dreamed it would happen so fast.But wait! There’s more!On top of all of this we find that (as we suspected all along) Webb doesn’t understand war. H/T to Virginia Virtucon:

“Anyone who tells you we can set a timetable for withdrawal doesn’t understand war,” he says. “And anyone who says that nothing can be done to speed a secure peace doesn’t understand America.”

~ Senate Candidate James Hothead Webb, September 24, 2006.

“Nay.” that’s how Senator Hothead voted on March 27, 20076 on striking from the supplemental spending bill language setting a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq.

So, if we can take him at his own word (risky, we understand), Jim Webb doesn’t understand war.

We didn’t think so.

SWAC Girl:Â Flip-flopping Jim Webb: “I was for the troops before I was against them….”

Virginia, and our military, deserve better.

No Pork for Oil

In what has to be one of the most truly clueless posts of the season, Josh over at Raising Kaine has: Bush Prepares to De-Fund Troops.

Josh says this: Both the House and Senate have passed bills which fully fund George Bush’s War in Iraq. George Bush has vowed to veto those bills.

Yes, Josh, he’s vowed to veto them because they’re laden in bazillion dollars of political pork payoffs that Empress Nancy and Dingy Harry had to stuff in there to get the votes they need for their surrender plans.

Both the House and Senate versions are stuffed with political payoffs that have nothing to do with the cost of the war or the defense of our country.

While some of them may even be worthy causes (I scoff at the thought of any funding of the presidential conventions), this bill was about supplemental funding for the war.

The Democrat(ick) party has told the country loud and clear that they are the party of surrender and defeat. Nothing matters to them but staying in power.
This is the pork in the House Bill. The Senate version adds even more:

$500 million for emergency wildfires suppression; the Forest Service currently has $831 million for this purpose;
$400 million for rural schools;
$283 million for the Milk Income Loss Contract program;
$120 million to compensate for the effects of Hurricane Katrina on the shrimp and menhaden fishing industries;
$100 million for citrus assistance;
$74 million for peanut storage costs;
$60.4 million for salmon fisheries in the Klamath River region in California and Oregon;
$50 million for asbestos mitigation at the U.S. Capitol Plant;
$48 million in salaries and expenses for the Farm Service Agency;
$35 million for NASA risk mitigation projects in Gulf Coast;
$25 million for spinach growers;
$25 million for livestock;
$20 million for Emergency Conservation Program for farmland damaged by freezing temperatures;
$16 million for security upgrades to House of Representatives office buildings;
$10 million for the International Boundary and Water Commission for the Rio Grande Flood Control System Rehabilitation project;
$6.4 million for House of Representative’s Salaries and Expenses Account for business continuity and disaster recovery expenses;
$5 million for losses suffered by aquaculture businesses including breeding, rearing, or transporting live fish as a result of viral hemorrhagic septicemia;
$4 million for the Office of Women’s Health at the Food and Drug Administration; and
A minimum wage increase, which is the subject of separate legislation.

It’s the “Let ‘em come and kill us Left” that’s playing politics here Josh.

On this day in history, March 1981

On this day in 1981

On March 30, 1981, U.S. President Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley Jr. outside a Washington hotel. White House press secretary James Brady, a Secret Service agent and a Washington police officer also were wounded. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Reagan survived, his incredible humor showing through the pain when he turned to his wife Nancy on the way to surgery and said, “Honey, I forgot to duck.”

Reagan returned to the White House and served until 1989 becoming arguably the best President of the 20th Century.

America needs another Ronald Reagan today. But unfortunately, I don’t believe there is, or will be, another.

It’s silly talking about how many years we will have to spend in the jungles of Vietnam when we could pave the whole country and put parking stripes on it and still be home by Christmas.
