Katrina: What should have been done

From Today’s Richmond Times-Dispatch

In Brief

Today’s Staggering Stat: If the federal government had simply divvied up the $127 billion it has spent so far on rebuilding New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina hit two years ago, each of the city’s residents would have had $425,000 cash in hand with which to buy a house and start life over somewhere else.

Kate O’Beirne: John Warner should run again.

Quoted at The Corner: …a Warner announcement that he will seek another (final) term could be welcome news.  Amazing.

No Kate, it would not.

Regardless of what you think of Tom David or Jim Gilmore (and we haven’t been big fans of either) John Warner’s Time is up.

Is John Warner retiring?

The Politico says:  John Warner to announce plans tomorrow

Sen. John Warner will announce tomorrow at the University of Virginia whether or not he intends to seek a sixth term, according to two top Virginia sources. Warner is planning a 2 p.m. news conference on the grounds of the Charlottesville, Va., school, where he took his law degree over 50 years ago. The Virginian will give his speech near the statue of Thomas Jefferson on the steps of the school’s famous Rotunda, adding a fitting Warner flourish to the event.

Virginia Tech season opener this weekend

Tech aims for unity at opener
Richmond Times-Dispatch

BLACKSBURG — It is a moment millions in Hokie Nation have waited for all summer: the Virginia Tech football team running into Lane Stadium on Saturday to the minute-long opening guitar riff and thumping drum beat of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”

As part of pregame ceremonies remembering the April 16 campus shootings, Tech will amend its traditional entrance for the season opener against East Carolina and let the Pirates enter the stadium at the same time as the Hokies.
